Pine Grove Ghost Town

Nevada is an amazing place. Nevadans know all about Isaiah and "Make straight a highway in the desert". The large number of Nevada's state "highways" meet that description. The road to Pine Grove, for a good part of it, meets that description.

We start with 28 miles east from US395 on a 2 lane, but paved road, then get to another 16 miles of "2 lane" dirt "highway", and finally, at a nondescript stick in the ground, we turn right and start the serious 5 mile, 2500 ft 4wheel climb up to the ghost town.

The drive itself is a joy. At least for someone who sees the life in high desert. But the arrival is amazing. A more or less intact little settlement. No vandalism, no graffiti, actual identifiable mining equipment. No longer operable; boilers and steam engines have been salvaged. But there is enough there to constitue a nice little 3 dimension, "tour for yourself" museum. But no fences and no ticket takers. Nevada, enjoy your heritage!
