Peavine Peak

This is the start of my favorite trail. It goes up the canyon till it runs into the face of the mountain and then continues up the canyon to the right side of the peak. Going around behind the peak it ends at a spring, and from there becomes a deer trail to the closest summit you see. The true summit is hidden behind what you can see, and is still another 1500 feet in elevation and 2 miles distant. The trail to the spring is about 2 1/4 miles each way with an elevation gain of 1400 feet, which means it has an AVERAGE grade of 13%.

At places the trail drops almost to the bottom of the canyon, and then you get right in to the aspen. They are beautiful no matter what the season.

As you see, in places the "trail" is more of a scramble than a hike. I like it anyway because it is empty. The canyon is deep enough that in summer you get early morning shade most of the way up, plus a really refreshing down draft. A stream runs down from the spring at the top so you get a good variety of birds and vegetation.
